Happy Canada Day with Style!

Tomorrow is a big day, ladies and gentlemen! Tomorrow is the day that our nation gets to celebrate the day that the British North American colonies joined together and collectively became the nation that we call Canada. Some of you may be gathering with friends and family on the big day or you may be spending a relaxing day at the beach and later watching the fireworks, whatever you find yourself doing you need something to wear! But what to wear on our nation's day? To reveal your answer first consider the weather, the summer heat has arrived so you know you are going to wear something summery. Canada's colours are red and white and as someone that loves a little festivity when dressing for an occasion, I suggest incorporating these colours into your summer outfit. Now that you have two things narrowed down, all you have left to do to complete your outfit is to find some summer clothing or accessories in red and white to incorporate into your overall look. Scroll down below for inspiration!

1. The Arm Party
Source: Alex and Ani
Source: slufoot.tumblr.com
An arm party is always fun especially on celebratory Canada Day! When wearing a collection of beaded and charmed bracelets such as the Alex and Ani pair above, add them to an outfit that is a little undone. A loose-fitting white button-down blouse similar to this one with rolled-up distressed jean shorts like these ones work perfectly with an arm party because both looks are laid-back and carefree. If you are attending a BBQ or house party, an outfit like this is a viable option.

2. The Statement Necklace
Source: Brika
Source: Pinterest.com
What better day to make a statement than on Canada's Day? If a modern and chic look is what you plan on wearing on Canada's birthday, then accessorize with a statement necklace. A red woven and chained statement necklace such as the above by Brika, shows the Canadian love while meeting your style quota at the same time. I recommend wearing this necklace with a white short-sleeved blouse similar to this, relaxed pants or skinny jeans like these and some nice summer sandals.

3. The Elegant Watch
Source: WATCH IT!
Source: yumikim.com
A simple white Michael Kors watch from WATCH IT! like the one above, is just what you need for your Canada Day ensemble. The sleek and sophisticated design works nicely with a bright red printed silk romper like this one from Yumi Kim or this one. The red and white colour combo spells "I love Canada" and "I love summer style" all at the same time.

4. The Summer Shorts
Source: GUESS
Source: capecodcollegiate.tumblr.com
Who wears short shorts? You will be wearing short shorts if you pick up this floral printed pair from GUESS in time for Canada Day. The tiny print adds femininity to the summer staple which is why I suggest wearing it with a red blouse . The soft layers and crossed neckline are a dainty touch that complements the relaxed shorts.

5. The Relaxed Shoe
Source: Manitobah Mukluks
Source: pinterest.com
Whether you are jumping on your friend's trampoline at a backyard house party or relaxing by the lake at the cottage on Canada Day, comfort is key. These burgundy fringed booties from Manitobah Mukluks are sure to keep those tootsies cozy while enjoying Canada's big day. For your Canada Day outfit, play off the fringe on the shoes and carry a fringed handbag. You will need something to carry all of your daily needs and this way you will be on top of the spring trends and coordinated.

Off to the Races: Queen's Plate Fashion

On July 6th it's time to up the fashion, put on your best Sunday hat, saddle up and watch the horse races at the Queen's Plate which was founded in 1860 by the Sir Casimir Gzowski and Thomas Patteson who requested that Queen Victoria grant a plate for the horse races in Toronto. The request was granted and the Queen's Plate was established as "the sport of royalty"when the daughter of Queen Victoria, Princess Louise agreed to attend the horse races. Those who attend the horse races are focussed on more than just galloping horses in the racetracks. Once people can peel their eyes away from the horses, all of the attention is on the fashion. There are certain style staples that make an outfit perfect for a day with the horses that would work especially well for the Queen's Plate. Scroll down below to see the looks!

The Exaggerated Hat
Source: glamour.com
You know what they say, go big or go home! When it comes to wearing a hat to the horse races, sometimes you just have to go big. Although there are many variations of appropriate hats to wear when seeing the equines compete, a colourful wide brim hat, like this one is the most obvious and fun option. A large hat is a sure way to standout and get into to the spirt of the day. If your are the type who likes to make a grandiose fashion statement, then some chic and grand headgear is sure to make a style impact. For the rest of your outfit, a neutral shift dress and accessories such as a bracelet like this one or a stylish watch are all that you need to complete the look. When wearing such a large hat, you don't want to wear a competing piece and instead keep the hat as your outfit anchor.

The Floral Dress
Source: dailymail.co.uk
There is something about a floral printed dress that seems ideal for an event such as the Queen's Plate. A floral printed dress is ladylike, summer appropriate and fresh which works seamlessly with the the exciting day event. Attending a formal event during the day includes wearing the right shoes and  nude pumps are an awesome choice as they evoke the same feelings as a floral printed dress and look good with everything. However if you are in a daring mood, you could always try a pink pump, printed pump or even a very current colour blocked pump to wear with your outfit. The colour of the shoe you wear all depends on the colours on your dress. A fascinator is a standout and ladylike option that is sure to pair nicely with a floral printed dress.

The Handbag
Source: instyle.com
No outfit is complete without a handbag especially an outfit that is worn to watch the horses go at it on the racetrack! Considering the feminine nature of an outfit worn at the Queen's Plate, a smaller handbag for all of your daily essentials is a safe bet. For your handbag, you may go the root of Lupita N'Yongo and match your handbag to your dress or you could go with a neutral handbag to compliment your dress or go with a handbag in a contrasting colour. The sky's the limit in terms of colour but I suggest sticking to a more ladylike handbag. A wide brim hat keeps within the tradition of horse race fashion.

The Monochromatic Look
Source: eonline.com
When in doubt, wear matching colours! A monochromatic outfit consisting of one solid colour is a simple and effective way to standout in the horse match crowd. Now wearing a monochromatic look does not mean that you cannot add a few different colours to your outfit. Case in point, the Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton breaks up her monochromatic look with by carrying a black clutch handbag to compliment her blue dress  and matching fascinator. Adding a complimenting colour to a monochromatic outfit helps create interest in your look while not veering too far away from the solidarity of the outfit.

The No Hat Look
Source: hawtcelebs.com
Although wearing a fascinator or ginormous hat are style staples for the horse races, if you find yourself unable to find one in time to attend the Queen's Plate I recommend wearing a beautiful, summery maxi dress. In the photo above, Alessandra Ambrosio is wearing a printed maxi dress and stylish belt that may go against the grain in terms of horse race style, but it is still a look that elegantly and appropriate.

Denim Overalls: To Wear or Not to Wear?

Denim has certainly come a long way from its days as a workwear staple for labourers and mechanics, with variations of the once casual everyday pant making its way into our wardobes. Last fall in particular, we saw black and white patterns, abstract prints and shredded jeans making waves in the denim world and now this summer season it is all about the denim overall! That's right, overalls! No longer are the jeans suspender hybrid reserved for kids under the age of 10 but overalls are now fashionable for ladies of all ages. Case in point, the always adorable Sarah Jessica Parker and style aficiando Olivia Palermo have been spotted wearing overalls. Overalls have also made a splash in the fashion blogoshpere being worn by stylishly succesful bloggers such as Danielle Bernstein from WeWoreWhat and Chiara Ferragni from The Blonde Salad. Despite the warm welcome that overalls have received in the fashion world, I am still on the fence about whether or not I should give the trend a try.

This summer I have decided to take a hands-on role in my garden, so I thought I would invest in a pair of some denim overalls but after looking at the way the likes of Hilary Duff and Annabel Fleur of the fashion blog, VivaLuxury are wearing the farmer style staple, I started to look at overalls in a whole new way. Below are five different stylish ways to wear denim overalls that in no way resemble what someone would wear while schlepping around in the dirt but I am still the verdict is still out on my decision to upgrade denim overalls to everyday style status. I suppose I will have to try them out first hand. In the meantime, I will have to ooh and ahh at the way these fashionable gals have styled their denim overalls. Scroll down below to check out the looks for yourself!

The Denim Short Overall Look
Source: Forever21.com
One way to try out the denim overall trend is to get shorty and the wear the shorts version! Denim short overalls are an easy way to ease yourself into the trend and perfect for a hot summer day. If you plan on giving shortveralls a whirl, one way to wear them is with a printed t-shirt such as the one above, to help play up the fun factor and casualness of shortveralls. For your accessories, aviators or cat-eye sunglasses are chic options to shield your eyes and an everyday handbag such as this one is just right to wear with shortveralls.

The Casual Chic Overall Look
Source: fashionsy.com
Who knew that denim overalls could look so chic? With a skinny leg, glamorous accessories and sassy heels, I suppose that anything can look chic. Style star and top blogger, Annabel Fleur shows us how to transform overalls into a fashion-forward look. How do you achieve that? Number one, look for a pair of skinny overalls. Overalls can sometimes look bulky due to all of the fabric, so streamlining the look with a skinny cut is your best bet. Number two, keeping up with the classic style of overalls wear them with a striped long-sleeved shirt. Number three, choose accessories that make a statement like this colour blocked clutch , statement necklace and metallic pumps.

The Carefree Denim Overall Look

Sometimes you just have to give in and embrace what life gives you! If the more traditional overall style is what you prefer, prevent baggy overalls from looking frumpy and dumpy by wearing them with a perfect summer loose-fitting blouse, which adds a nice contrast to the structured denim fabric. When adding accessories to the look, simple, slightly masculine jewelry is the way to go as it keeps the look within the classic, rough and tumble zone but it adds a dash of style.

The Fitted Denim Overall Look

Source: InStyle.com
As we all can now see, overalls have a plethora of styles that can be worn and adorned so it should be of no surprise that the latest style that I am writing about is fitted overalls. More feminine and sexy than their baggy sister, fitted overalls look best with a sleek and fitted tank top a la Hilary Duff. Low-heeled booties and rounded tortoise shell sunglasses keep this outfit cool and modern with the chain link shoulder bag boosting the attractiveness of the overall look, no pun intended.

The Flirty Denim Overall Look
Source: whowhatwear.com
When heading out to meet prospective dates, I bet overalls weren't your first wardrobe choice but when showing just the right amount of skin in a subtle way overalls quickly rise to the top! Distressed overalls spell carefree and with the addition of a cropped top and chic sunglasses, the whole look is flirty! Oxford shoes are a preppy style staple that give this flirty denim overall look a girl next door feel.

Crop Tops: Some Trends Die Hard

Last summer when I was a contributor for FashionWows, I wrote about the crop top trend that started to emerge last year. After a long hiatus and the dwindling popularity of Britney Spears, crop tops are back and hotter than ever! At first, it may have seemed like a fleeting trend but if the outfits on these stylish celebrities are any indication, it seems that the "heightened" look has been planted firmly on the fashion ground. Crop tops are much more versatile than they appear and can be worn in a myriad of ways, for just about any occasion. Scroll down below to see what I am talking about!

The Casual Crop Top Look
Source: outfitid.com
This carefree summer outfit worn by model Alessandra Ambrosio is a perfect example of how to keep the crop look chic and casual. The casual striped crop top that Alessandra is wearing has a loose fit which reveals just the right amount of skin without showing too much of it. Given the revealing nature of a crop top, in order to keep the look fashionable and not tacky it is best to wear the piece in either two ways: loose-fitting and with a fuller bottom. Alessandra's outfit includes both of these crop top requirements. When worn with rolled-up boyfriend jeans dainty jewelry and cat-eye sunglasses this crop top looks fashionable and easy breezy.

The Subtle Crop Top Look
Source: InStyle.com
If wearing a crop top makes you feel a little self-conscious about showing your tummy, then try wearing a top with a peak-a-boo cut out as it's a simple and subtle way to take part in the trend that still let's you comfortable. Normally, I wouldn't suggest wearing a mini skirt with a revealing top but if you are revealing just tiny bit of belly then wearing a mini skirt works! Kendall Jenner makes crop tops look sophisticated in this royal blue monochromatic outfit and the ladylike pumps add an elegant touch.

The Boho Glam Crop Top Look
Source: InStyle.com
Crop tops can look appropriate for any occasion, it's all in how you style it! This white ruffled crop top  worn by Alexa Chung has a bohemian vibe and with this glamorous gold midi-skirt, shiny black booties and classic Chanel clutch , the whole look becomes boho glam! Whoever thought that crop tops were reserved for jersey knits and carefree lightweight fabrics, will be pleasantly surprised when seeing this look. The ruffles on this shirt show that crop tops  have the ability to be more than the casual, fun piece in your wardrobe.

The Glamorous Crop Top Look
Source: InStyle.com
Scratching your head trying to think of a way to make your crop top look glamorous? Well, scratch no more! Jamie King's navy long-sleeved crop top and matching long skirt with a thigh-high slit  is a perfect example of how to wear the crop top to a more formal affair. The dark colour of the outfit and the long sleeves combined with the length of the skirt balance out the skin exposure making the outfit appropriate for a more refined event. The white clutch and pointy toe pumps are a great addition to the outfit solidifying this outfit as a glamorous crop top evening look.

The Flirty Crop Top Look
Source: fashionista.com
There is no denying the flirtatious nature of a crop top especially one that resembles the curvy shape of a bustier. The red hot chilly pepper print on this Dolce and Gabbana outfit worn by Dree Hemingway is clearly a metaphor for how hot bustier crop top is which makes pairing it with a matching A-Line skirt just perfect as it helps to balance out the sexiness of the bustier crop top. A small shoulder bag compliments the look as it does not take any attention away from the flirty bustier crop top.

My Love Affair with Handbags and a Peak at JOELLE HAWKENS by Treesje!

An oldie but a goodie.

You know what they say, old habits die hard. From a young girl I have always carried a handbag and thought of it as an essential part of my look. My favourite handbag with a cross body style with a pastel colour block print and it hardly left my side. There was one time when I was on a family vacation one of the sights that I went to see with my family required that I put my handbag through a security check, which meant I had to take off my handbag and I refused! At the age of five I knew how important a handbag was for my signature look, even if it meant getting into a little trouble!

Today my handbags are more of the standout variety and by that I mean they are brightly coloured, depending on the outfit really, and they are the finishing touch of my look. The other day, when I was enjoying the sun and had plans of spending the day moseying about the city I decided that my neon bag was a must-have for my look. After already being set on wearing my turquoise dress from Calypso St. Barths and pink oxford shoes from ALDO, I knew that in order to make an impact I needed handbag that would contrast perfectly with my dress and my neon bag did just that. The cat-eye sunglasses that I bought from a street vendor in Soho, NYC and statement necklace from H&M were all that I needed to make my outfit complete.

Bright summer bags are a great addition to any summer look, which is why I am happy to share with you the Spring/Summer 2014 line from JOELLE HAWKENS, the sister line to Treesje. The standout colours and classic shapes make them easy to wear with just about any look you have in your summer wardrobe including, your casual everyday outfits and work wardrobe. Scroll down below to see what I am referring to!

Denim in Distress: 5 Chic, Interesting and Balanced Ways to Wear Ripped Jeans

Jeans everywhere are distressed. Maybe people are feeling more laid-back lately or maybe people are taking a more hands-on approach when it comes to working around this house? Whatever the case may be, ripped jeans are having a stylish moment. Once upon a time ripped jeans were mainly worn by rockstars, labourers and even by people working in the garden but now ripped jeans are something that look appropriate for all occasions! Ok, maybe not all occasions. I wouldn't recommend wearing ripped jeans in an office environment but if you are running around town, going to lunch or, headed out on a date, ripped jeans are smart choice.

Wearing ripped jeans with a casual t-shirt, a button-up blouse or a tank top is the most common way to wear distressed denim and creates a rough, laid-back look. However, in my opinion one of the freshest ways to wear shredded denim is with something chic and sophisticated. Why wear two opposing looks in one outfit you may ask? Because pairing something grunge-looking with something prim makes for an outfit that is interesting and balanced and with the right styling your outfit will look inherently chic. Looking for some tips on how to achieve a chic, interesting and balanced outfit whilst wearing ripped jeans? Scroll down below!

Chic Ripped Jeans Look Number One

Source: ilovesavingcash.com
In this ripped jeans look, we see the shredded denim trend on a lower scale with small rips that reveal the threaded layers of the denim. If you are a distressed denim virgin and would like to dip your toes into the trend, a pair like this one and in the photograph above is a good pair to try. The medium wash and minor tears pair well with an effortless white short-sleeved blouse, transparent handbag (similar) and ladylike white sandals. The culmination of these fashion pieces with lightly ripped jeans creates a chic, easy, interesting and balanced look perfect for the summer.

Chic Ripped Jeans Look Number Two

Source: grasiemercedes.com
These ripped jeans (there is a similar pair here) have more shreds and slashes than the previous pair and a clever way to balance out their rough and tumble look is to wear it with a floral print blouse and colourful printed clutch. Bright shades and patterns add an unique personality to distressed denim that is different than the typical headbanger look and instead makes the cut jeans appear soft and feminine. Plastic, thick framed sunglasses and pointy toe sandals cap off the look.

Chic Ripped Jeans Look Number Three

Source: lookbook.nu
Skinny jeans with complete holes at the knee take ripped jeans to a whole new level. The pair in the photograph personify the chic, interesting, balanced ripped jeans look because they are fitted like a chic pair of jeans and there is no denying their distress. To elevate the chic factor of your outfit when wearing denim like these, couple them with classic pieces that have an added touch of interest such as a fitted white t-shirtblack stiletto booties and a black jacket. The black shoulder bag in the above photo is the perfect classic-meets-interesting accessory (similar one here) that works seamlessly with the overall outfit.

Chic Ripped Jeans Look Number Four

Source: thefashionthinktank.com
This denim look embodies the chic, interesting and balance ripped jeans look to a T with an emphasis on chic, mainly because of the gold embellished blouse (similar one here) and gorgeous quilted handbag, which can't help but make an outfit appear chic. The snug fit of the ripped jeans (similar one here ) enhance the chicness of this outfit as well because they are refined and the black booties play up the edginess of the cuts and shreds. If the idea of shredded denim brings up the feeling of hairbands and makes you cringe, this outfit will certainly change your opinion of the matter.

Chic Ripped Jeans Look Number Five

Source: glambistro.com
Although the above pair of distressed denim is quite distressed (similar pair here), they are almost an afterthought due to the stylish printed blazerstatement necklace and blue aviators. Wearing shredded jeans with standout accessories in a classic cuts balances out the impact of the jeans without tipping the scales of this outfit's focus. A studded handbag in a classic style creates an equilibrium that is embodied in this outfit.
