To Wear White or To Not Wear White: Amanda's Fashion Spot Tackles The Great Debate!

Source: lover.ly
White is the colour of purity, innocence and new beginnings. White is the signature colour of summer. White is the new black, didn't you know? There are few occasions in life where it is customary, if not necessary to wear white, except after Labour Day! (heehee) These events include white tie events such as formal balls, the Sensation dance music event, a daytime Spring event and most famously on your wedding day. According to HowStuffWorks.com once images of Queen Victoria in a white wedding dress caught the attention of the public, it was declared in Godey's Lady's Book that "white was the most fitting hue, whatever the material" and thus the tradition of wearing a white wedding dress began. Since the 19th century, white wedding dresses have been the colour of choice for brides and at one point wearing a white wedding dress was considered a status symbol. Along with the traditions associated with bridal gowns comes traditions associated with the attire of wedding guest, which is always followed by the question - is it ever ok for a guest to wear white to a wedding?

As a fashionista and someone who values tradition, I am a firm believer that if you are not the bride it is never ok to wear white to a wedding. Even though a wedding is an union let's get real ladies so much of the focus of the big day is on the wedding dress. Now there are are times when a bride may wear a coloured dress, however I still believe that unless the bride states that it acceptable for her guests to wear white, then it is not ok to wear white to a wedding. Lucky for guests everywhere there are many clothing options to wear to a wedding that do not include white. In my opinion, the best looks to wear to a wedding include something that is ladylike with a colour, texture or a print. Each of these options will ensure that you standout without drawing attention away from the bride. If you are attending a wedding anytime soon, I suggest that you visit Lover.ly, an easy-to-use online wedding planning tool to make planning the big day stress-free. The wonderful website also has an online shop where as a guest you can easily purchase a wedding guest appropriate dress.

When attending a wedding, you can't go wrong with wearing a solid colour because it is a foolproof and safe way to look put together and appropriate at the same time. Bright colours are a good way to go as they flatter most skin tones and are a sure way to make a statement that won't in any way compete with the bride. The hot pink dress worn by Jamie Chung in the photo above is a perfect look if wearing a simple, colourful dress is the way that you choose to go. Lover.ly has a similar dress by Keepsake for $105 that you can access here.

The Ethereal Printed Dress

Weddings are oh so romantic, dreamy and mark a new beginning for two people who are madly in love. An ethereal print dress, which Amanda's Fashion Spot defines as a printed dress either floral or abstract in soft colours that typically include shades of blue, periwinkle or lavender, is a lovely style of dress to wear to a wedding because it evokes the newness and purity of a new marriage with its beautiful colours and prints. The above dress worn by Olivia Palermo is a perfect example of an ethereal print dress with its abstract floral print in a variety of colours. The below dress is by Nicole Miller ATELIER costs $355 and is available at Lover.ly.

The Lace Dress

Although lace is something that is typically worn by the bride, it is still acceptable to wear lace to a wedding. In fact, I encourage it. Just like The Ethereal Print Dress, a lace dress channels the romance of the day. Wearing a lace dress in a shade such as yellow is a good choice as it is associated with happiness and is used to evoke feelings of optimism.  Miranda Kerr's ladylike yellow lace dress is an excellent choice to wear to a wedding and lucky for you Lover.ly carries a similar style by Dessy for $262.
The Strapless High-Low Dress

When attending a wedding if you are unsure whether to wear a full-length dress or show off those legs, a strapless high-low dress is the choice for you. The Strapless High-Low dress has a formal touch while still looking playful at the same time. Blake Lively styled her high-low dress nicely with gold cuff bracelets and peep toe pumps in a contrasting shade. Blake kept the neckline simple which is a smart choice because it ensures that the attention is on the dress. If this dress tickles your fancy, you can purchase a similar style by Dessy for $230 available at Lover.ly.

The Full-Length Printed Dress

If you are a guest at a more formal wedding, a full length floral print is a great choice. Full-length dresses are formal by nature and the floral print keeps the dress within the realm of new beginnings and romance. This dress worn by Rosie Huntington-Whiteley has an exotic and glamorous vibe that is also evoked in this Amsale dress available at Lover.ly for $259.
