Happy Hallowe'en from Amanda's Fashion Spot!

Source: thecavenderdiary.com
To say that I love Hallowe'en is an understatement. The cool, crisp and refreshing autumn air, the sweet treats and the opportunity to use my imagination to craftily create a costume of my choice is something that excites me! As a fashionista, the ability to really think outside of the box and allow my creative juices to flow while putting together a costume is truthfully, a blissful experience. However, it is not just the dressing up part that I look forward to during this time of year, it is also the gothic, mysterious elements that surround Hallowe'en.  Ever since I was a young girl, I have a had a vivid imagination. Whenever I would go for a walk in the park, I would pretend that I was in a magical forest and explore the secluded little nooks of nature in an effort to see what mysteries lied inside those hidden areas.

Over the years, I have been able to unleash my creative ideas in the form of a Hallowe'en costume and I am here to share some of my costumes throughout the years with all of you! Scroll down below and let me know which one you like best!

Hawaiian Girl

This costume was store bought and very comfortable thanks to the "grass" skirt.

Belly Dancer!

After watching a dance routine on So you think you can dance?, I was inspired to dress up as a belly dancer! I decorated the bra with fabric, gold sparkly sequins and, "chains" that are normally used to decorate a Christmas tree. The other items were things that I had lying around the house.

Minnie Mouse

I was so excited about this costume which took hours to complete due to the large jewels, that were partly sewn on by myself and partly my very kind, patient friend.

Leader of the pack, Rizzo.

Who doesn't love Grease? Rizzo is the sassy, bad girl and I had a ball dressing up as her. This was another comfortable costume which was made up of an old jazz leotard and tights. I can't forget the shiny pink jacket that I purchased from TJ Maxx in Manhattan.

Glamorous '70's Disco Cher

Cher is a cultural icon and has been an influence for me, ever since I saw Mermaids. She has worn many different outfits but for this costume, I took inspiration from her glamorous phase.

Betty Boop

Boop-Oop-A-Doop! This costume was for my grandmother, who was nicknamed Betty Boop in her younger days.

Miss Piggy!

As a kid, I could not go anywhere without my Miss Piggy doll. I had the most fun in this costume.

Carmen Sandiego

I literally put this costume together in about 15 minutes when I needed a last minute costume. It was fun to dress up as the mysterious detective.

The Little Mermaid

This year I decided to dress up as my all-time favourite Disney Princess, Ariel! This costume took a long time to put together but I really enjoyed the process.

What will you be dressing up as this year? Share your photos with me on Facebook or Twitter. Also, don't forget to check out Amanda's Fashion Spot on Pinterest and Instagram!

Styling and Shopping with Jen for Her High School Reunion!

Source: Pinterest.com
As a fashion blogger and lover of clothes and style, I often get asked about fashion, clothes and style. The questions that I receive often entail inquiries about what one should wear to work, what kind of outfit will look appropriate at a wedding or a girls night out and many, many more. Whatever the question may be, I am happy to lend a stylish, helping hand because giving fashion advice is one of my favourite things to do! Helping people find an item of clothing or entire outfit that flatters their shape or boosts their confidence is rewarding, so that is why when my dear friend (and fellow Burlesque Baby), Jen asked me to help her find two outfits to wear high school reunion, I jumped at the chance!

To prepare for our shopping and styling session, I did a little bit of research beforehand to refresh my knowledge on what trends, fits and cuts that would be most flattering on Jen. After looking at some of her photos, I determined that she would look best in streamlined cut blouses, dark wash skinny jeans, boxy-cut jackets or anything with a defined waist. I also thought we should try a colour palette that consisted of blues, oranges and greens, as these shades would be most flattering with Jen's colouring. I complied a series of looks from magazine clippings and created mini story boards to communicate to Jen the vision that I had for her outfits and to make sure that felt comfortable with what I had envisioned.

Next stop, the Toronto Eaton Centre! I decided that we should visit "the largest mall in downtown Toronto" because of its wide selection and easy navigation. When I arrived at the mall I found Jen browsing through H&M. We had a quick chat about our style goals for the day and off we went. When working as a stylist or personal shopper, I think it is very important to ensure that I am able to create looks that not only reflect the vision that I have for my clients, but also to create looks that my clients feel comfortable wearing as well. When it comes to personal style, I believe that it should always reflect your personality and makes you feel confident. With that said it is always fun, and sometimes important, to experiment with trends when you are on the road to discovering your personal style. Trial and error is very important.

Back to our shopping trip! As we perused the mall, we stuck to the fast fashion stores, H&M, Express and Gap, where we found a plethora of fashionable items that were just perfect for Jen's high school reunion. Sticking to our styling goals, we picked out a boxy-cut quilted motorcycle jacket, two pairs of wear-with-everything-skinny-jeans one dark wash and one medium wash, a sleeveless animal print blouse, two silver necklaces, some drop earrings and pointy-heeled booties! On top of this, we also picked out a tweed blazer, nude button-down blouse and, some other items that Jen wanted to add to her everyday wardrobe.

Once we completed our shopping trip, we discussed which pieces would work together for each of Jen's high school reunion events. For the pub night, we decided that the boxy-cut quilted motorcycle jacker, animal print blouse, dark wash wear-with-everything-skinny-jeans and pointy-heeled booties would collectively make for a very hot, stylish and high school reunion appropriate outfit. For the other half of Jen's reunion which was going to be held at a homecoming game where it may be a little chilly, we decided on the tweed jacket and nude button-down blouse for a casual, fashionable and collegiate type of look.

All in all the styling and shopping experience was a success! We managed to find some awesome pieces that would work for not only Jen's high school reunion but were versatile enough for Jen to wear in her everyday life. I had such a great time paying forward my fashion know-how while helping Jen find the perfect looks for her high school reunion.

Look down below to see Jen's final looks!

Mad for a Plaid Red Skirt!

Source: 1bp.blogspot.com
Ever since I was about four years old, I loved wearing plaid skirts. At that time in my life, I had a plaid skirt in every colour, except at that time I referred to them as kilts which are actually a knee-length garment traditionally worn by Scottish men. I had plaid skirts in every colour from forest green to deep navy to rich red and would often wear them with a matching turtleneck to school. All these years later, not much has changed. I still love to wear a cute, little, printed skirt with a turtleneck, although I don't have them in as many colours as I used to and I do not own a plaid skirt. However, after looking at the plaid in Saint Laurent's and Moschino's Fall 2013 collection and the influx of plaid shirts, skirts and scarves in stores everywhere, I suddenly felt nostalgic with a desire to add an element of my former style uniform to my current wardrobe.

These days the classic plaid skirt, is often worn in a myriad of ways. For a cozy chic look for fall, the plaid skirt looks especially well with a cream chunky cowl neck sweater. For a look that is more refined, pair the skirt with the aforementioned turtleneck and tall leather boots. If you plan on wearing your plaid skirt for a day of running around, combine it with an ever-so-trendy utility jacket for a relaxed look. Whenever you want to wear an outfit that is a little fun, take some inspiration from Cher and Dionne and combine your plaid skirt with a collared shirt and/or a boyfriend blazer. Make sure to wear edgy accessories with the Clueless-inspired look to avoid looking like a schoolgirl. Although the plaid skirt is something that can be worn by women of all ages, before you leave the house take a quick glance in the mirror to ensure that your plaid skirt outfit is age appropriate.

With a plaid skirt on the brain, specifically a red one, I decided to do a little research to where to find one that was both affordable and fashionable. After browsing the websites of a few fast fashion stores, I settled on a red plaid skirt from Forever 21 that is formerly called the "Darling Plaid Skater Skirt". With its bias-cut and fitted black waist, I knew it was the skirt for me. I immediately started to imagine all the ways that I wanted to style it. Now instead of venturing out to the mall, I decided to purchase this skirt online. After a week of battling a flu, buying something from the comfort of my couch seemed ideal. Much to my delight as a Forever 21 email subscriber, I was able to use a coupon code that allowed me to save 21% off the full price of the skirt! Lucky me!

Sweet and Scentual: Your Little Black Dress Has a New Companion

Source: Guerlain.com
When deciding on what to wear each morning, there are a few steps that one must take. First, you must decide on an outfit. Second, you must add accessories that complement said outfit and finally, you must add the most captivating accessory, perfume.Whether you are in the mood for a laugh, relaxation, love or something to add a little pep in your step, there is a scent for every mood, season and occasion. All you need to make an impact is a little spritz on your pulse points, the places on your body where blood vessels are closest to the skin and radiate heat which allows the fragrance to be the released into the air.

Nothing is more luxurious than a lovely smelling perfume. Ever since I was a young girl, I have been a lover of perfumes and sweet scents. One of my first fragrances was a set of rose-scented items that included lip balm, soap and body lotion from Crabtree and Evelyn. Whenever I applied my lip balm, lathered up my soap or moisturized my skin with my body lotion, I felt as if I was wrapped in a sweet, warm blanket of rose petals. As I got older, I started to wear "adult" scents and one of the first perfumes that I tried was the musky, smoky and sweet Angel by Thierry Mugler, which you can read more about here.

Although I understand the personal nature that a signature scent has for someone, it is sometimes nice to make a few adjustments and refresh your perfume collection. In comes Guerlain's newest scent, La Petite Robe Noire which translates into, "The Little Black Dress"and is the newest perfume that I have added to my batch of beloved scents. With notes of black cherry and Bulgarian rose, La Petite Robe Noire is a scent that is filled with coquettish flirtation and a little bit of mystery, the perfect combination that exudes warmth making it fitting for the cooler fall season. After wearing my go-to scents, Gucci Flora and Prada Candy for a few years now, it is nice to give a new scent a try and expand my "aroma wardrobe".

Speaking of wardrobe, it is hard not to think of the classic, the sexy and just a little bit of everything, little black dress when waxing poetic about Guerlain's La Petite Robe Noire, which is honestly the most fitting companion for your little black dress so check out some of my favourite little black dress looks below (let's not forget my Va Voom Sha Bang Dress)!
