Amanda's Fashion Spot: Academy Awards Red Carpet, New York, London and, Milan Fashion Week Favourites!

Fashion month may be technically over but many a major fashion event are still going strong as we find ourselves in the middle of March. Milan and Paris Fashion Week have finished up and Toronto's World Mastercard Fashion Week will be here before you can say, "Fabulous!" But for those of you who may have missed out on Fashion months festivities, here is a quick summary of some of the best looks and my personal favourites.

Starting with the Academy Awards, where red carpet fashion came to a crescendo and exploded into so many looks that it was hard to keep count. The height of where all of Hollywood's fashion energy comes together and works their hardest to execute their most stylish looks. All eyes are on the stars (and the stylists behind them) as it is time to bring it!

This time around, there were so many looks that caught my eye that it was hard to narrow down my favourites to just five looks, so instead I focussed on my favourite trends.

Here we have gilded gold on Nicole Kidman in L'Wren Scott, Catherine Zeta-Jones in Zuhair Murad and, Selma Hayek in Alexander McQueen. Each gown is fittingly in a simple silhouette as embellishments as opulent as this, are best suited in a gown shape that is refined. Each of these looks make just the right amount of impact for a glitzy, Hollywood affair such as the Academy Awards.

On the other side of the spectrum, we have the opposite of gold, something much darker than the sparkly predecessors, and that is dark metallics and sequins. Naomi Watts in Armani Prive, Kelly Osbourne in Tony Ward Couture and, Jennifer Hudson in Roberto Cavalli, are each in looks that are seemingly simple silhouettes however, each gown has something extra special to kick the look up a notch. Naomi's gown has an asymmetrical shoulder, Jennifer's gown has an off-centre slit and Kelly's gown is in a multi-strapped halter-style gown with a long train. Adele wore a modest 3/4 length-sleeve sparkly Jenny Packham gown and Sandra Bullock a cap-sleeve Elie Saab gown, each went with a more subdued style that still packed a punch with the beautiful fabrications.

These Academy Awards looks show that when going Hollywood, go big or go home. If you plan on wearing a metallic look of any shade then the darker the look, the more leeway you have in terms of cut. If you want to wear a brighter, lighter shade, keep the cut simple. What are your thoughts on wearing metallics, sequins and, embellishments? Do you think they will find a place in your spring wardrobe?

So New York Fashion Week has come and gone but the looks still live on. Once fall rolls around we will be sure to see some of these looks in stores and on streets everywhere.

Some of my favourite New York Fashion Week looks included the following:

Zac Posen

The burnt orange, rust and, oxblood looks at Zac Posen, represents what fall is really all about, beautiful brightly coloured leaves in various shades of crimson, marigold and, bittersweet orange.

Diane Von Furstenberg

This collection by Diane Von Furstenberg reminded me of a powerful, fashionable jet setter who is confident, sexy and, successful. I loved the modern skinny pant suits and high-waisted metallic leather skirts. The animal print jumpsuit offered a modern and stylish way to dress for a woman who means business!

Marchesa

Marchesa always has the most beautiful, intricate, origami-style designs. This latest collection showed their signature folds in shiny, luxurious satin with beautiful embellishments. Some of the gowns had a more ethereal, bohemian vibe for example, the black and white ensemble to left, that maintained the same intricacy as the other designs except these gowns had more movement.

Anna Sui

This collection was every bit cute and colourful with a dash of mod! I love the bright emerald, cobalts and, fuschia pieces that could easily be mixed and matched for a fun bright look on a grey autumn day.

Across the pond in London, were a series of colourful, fun, quirky and, edgier looks.

Julien McDonald

Julien McDonald presented a collection that was edgy with the chain mail and colourful with the brights. These dresses make me want to party like a rockstar and exude a carefree, edgy look in my wardrobe.

Burberry Prorsum

I spotted *wink wink* a nod to animal print in this collection. In fact, it was more than a nod, it a full- on point! Animal print adorned everything from coat sleeves to t-shirts to handbags to trench coats and, pencil skirts. All of the looks were sophisticated and stylish, naturally. There was also another print on the catwalk, hearts which appeared on many of the pieces available in the collection.

Moschino Cheap and Chic

This quirky pink and black collection reminded of the '90's. Overall this collection was all about making fashion fun. From the graphic prints to the short hemlines, I am inspired to think of my fall wardrobe in a whole new way!

Dolce and Gabbana

An ode to red! The lush, strong colour that symbolizes passion, desire, power and, spontaneity was heavily featured in the Fall 2013 Dolce and Gabbanna collection. Featured in a series of dresses in various styles, the gorgeous frocks were adorned with beautiful embellishments that had me inspired and intrigued. The dresses evoked a romantic feel that always has its place in one's wardrobe whether your outfit will be worn on Valentine's Day or any day.

Well that's a wrap! It is on to the next fashion week which will be Toronto Fashion Week that starts next Monday! Yours truly will be attending the Tuesday shows, so stay tuned to for updates. What were your favourite looks from New York, London and Milan Fashion Week? What shows are you looking forward to seeing during Toronto's World Mastercard Fashion Week?
