What's in a name?: Yves Saint Laurent to be renamed Saint Laurent Paris

Source: ipkitten.blogspot.ca

Hedi Slimane has recently been named the new creative director of the iconic French fashion design house, Yves Saint Laurent. In an effort to put his stamp on the legendary label he has decided to rename it Saint Laurent Paris, just in time for his Spring 2013 collection. Despite this change, the famous YSL logo will remain on the brand's variety of products.

After hearing this, it made me think about the importance of branding and how much iconic brands are changing everyday. In a world where everything seems to be changing with communication becoming easier and easier through social media, the growing popularity of ebooks and the world of fast fashion, do you think that iconic labels need to "get with the program" in order to move with the changing pace of the world or should iconic labels stay the same? Let me know in the comments below!

Here are some photos celebrating some of Yves Saint Laurent's beautiful designs:

Best Dressed: Muchmusic Video Awards 2012

Just last Sunday, Canada's legendary music channel Muchmusic celebrated it's annual Muchmusic Video Awards. Although there were many memorable moments such as Katy Perry's metamorphic performance and LMFAO coming on stage in some very unique clothing choices, here at Amanda's Fashion Spot it is all about the red carpet! The red carpet had two distinct trends for the evening, goth and minis, two very different and yet equally impactful fashion statements. So let's get down to the goods and take a look at the MMVA's best dressed!

1) Shenae Grimes in Amanda Lee Kew

Representing Canadian designer Amanda Lee Kew, Shenea Grimes wore a custom creation by the Ryerson grad. Her look channeled Kew's gothic Fall 2012 presentation looks with a straight cut and black lightweight fabric but Grimes put her own spin on it with a gold arm bracelet and gold studded shoes, giving her look a boho vibe.

2) Selena Gomez in a gold sequin mini

Over the last two years, sequins have been everywhere. From a casual t-shirt, to boyfriend blazers, to skinny pants to skirts and the list goes on. Despite their frequent appearances on every form of apparel, they just never get old. Selena Gomez looked every bit trendy and fun in her gold sequin mini, perfect for a New Year's Party, a night on the town or the MMVA's!

3) Katy Perry in VAWK

Representing Project Runway Canada alum Sunny Fong, Katy Perry channeled her inner goth girl in the most glamorous way as her sheer black dress was accented perfectly with a gold chest plate and luscious purple ombre hair. She kept the jewelry simple with one gold bracelet and this helped let the dress shine.

4) Keshia Chante in Lucian Matis

Wearing a design by another Project Runway Canada alum Lucian Matis, the "Does He Love Me?" singer stepped out in an olive green mini accented with a gold sparkly belt.  Chante glowed and even sported on trend neon nails that contrasted with her fun outfit.

5) Carly Rae Jepsen in Sachin & Babi

The singer of the moment Carly Rae Jepsen, channeled Angelina Jolie in her thigh high, double-slit black leather gown. Accessorized with a trendy and fun colourful bib necklace, the whole look is a perfect blend of youthful edginess.

It was nice to see the stars representing Canadian fashion design talent and in the future we hope to see more of it! What did you think of the Muchmusic Video Awards red carpet look? Let me know in the comments below!

So you want to work in fashion? Part Deux

Source: Fashionista.com
Awhile back, I wrote a post about working in the fashion industry with some very valuable information, such as volunteering, interning and brushing up on your fashion knowledge. As a full-time student and after gaining some more experience in the fashion industry, I have learned another very helpful tip that some of you fellow fashion loving students may find beneficial. Instead of allowing school to inhibit your fashion ambitions, let school enable you to achieve them!

What do I mean you wonder? Well, at a time when school seems to consume your life and you find it difficult to volunteer or intern as much as you would like to, get involved in school! As a high school or college/university student who may not be studying fashion but would love to dip their toes in the world of haute couture, ready-to-wear and Forever 21, here are two essential tips for getting involved in fashion when it seems that fashion world may be miles away:

1) Get in the game

The school game that is. Most schools have oodles and oodles of organizations from theatre clubs, newspapers, blogs, 'zines and associations that are filled with jobs that will you teach you very valuable skills that will assist you in your future fashion career.

See a future for yourself as the next Anna Wintour? Get involved with your schools newspaper or blog. It will help you gain writing clips and experience, which is a must if you want to start writing for your favourite fashion glossy. Also, many school newspapers and blogs have a much smaller staff than a magazine, so instead of having a hardworking intern or editor correct your work, you will most likely have to do that all yourself, which is great for you because it will give you experience as not only a writer but an editor as well.

Want to be a stylist to the stars like Brad Goreski? Volunteer to do costume design or wardrobe for your school's theatre group. You will get hands-on experience putting outfits together and learn how to deal with a colourful array of personalities. As someone that has done this before, it was one of the most rewarding, challenging and creative fashion experiences that I have had to date, so I would highly recommend it. Make sure to take pictures of all of your creations, so you can use to them in a portfolio to show potential employers.

2) Carve your own path

After looking at your school's activities list, you may find that the clubs or organizations that they are offering are just not the right fit for you. So why not start your own club? To become a mover and shaker in the fashion biz, you have to put yourself out there and take a risk and creating a club or school group is great way to do just that.

Right now is an ideal time to capitalize on social media with its popularity at an all time high. Give creating an Instagram account dedicated to documenting your school's street style a shot or start a fashion blog that writes about the latest happenings in your school's fashion scene. Each are modern, easy ways to update your fashion skills while still being in school. A couple of months back, I became the Fashion Blogger for Ryerson University's Arts of Contemporary Studies Course Union blog, called ACSLovin' and it is a great way for myself to update my fellow scholars on all things fashion. Check it out here!

Despite the amazing benefits of being an intern, sometimes it is difficult for aspiring fashionistas to have them due to little to no compensation and the difficulty to fit additional responsibilities into an already hectic schedule. So, why not try incorporating fashion into your life in a whole new way!

Source: thebeautydepartment.com
Hello there fashion forward readers! Welcome to my first blog post as a contributor to the lovely Amanda's Fashion Spot! Allow me to introduce myself, my name is Ashley and I plan on bringing you some great blogs with tips and tricks on makeup and occasionally on fashion (they do go hand in hand!)

As previously stated by Amanda, I am a certified Makeup Artist having graduated from George Brown's Yorkville School of Makeup and Esthetics, where I studied the tricks of the trade covering everything from high fashion, bridal, period, photography makeup and SPFX makeup, learning from some fantastic makeup artists who all currently work in the business.

I've know Miss Amanda for oh 20 years now (time flies) and was super excited when she approached me to see if I would be interested in collaborating on her blog (hells ya!).

I have so many ideas to share with her loyal readers on how to achieve that perfect sun kissed look, the perfect way to wear a bold lip and how to achieve the perfect eyeliner look (just to name a few future posts!). Plus, I'll be doing some product reviews comparing high-end makeup products to drug store products!

My goal is to make everyone feel confident and comfortable with makeup and show how effortless looking fabulous can be!

So hold on tight my little dynamite divas, this is going to be FABULOUS!!!

Xoxo

Ashley
