The Royal Wedding: Hat Trick!

One of the most common accessories for attendees at an English wedding is not the shoes or a handbag but a fascinator

What is a fascinator you ask? Originally gaining popularity in the early 20th century, a fascinator is a formal style of millinery worn on the top or side of the head typically made with feathers, ribbons or silk flowers. Keeping up with English tradition, the royal wedding saw its well-dressed guests wear an array of fascinators and hats to celebrate the union of Prince William and Her Royal Highness, Duchess Catherine Middleton of Cambridge and here are my favourites. Look on and be inspired:
Lighter Shade of Pale

On the left is Marina Fogle wife of television presenter Ben Fogle, who made her way into the royal wedding wearing a beige netted headpiece with two ribbon-like details. On the right is Princess Letizia of Asturias who wore a soft pink hat with curled brim, netted overlay and feather adornment. Choosing soft colours these attendees keep their looks appropriate for the freshness of spring.

The Higher the Hat, The Closer to God
In the photo to the left, both princesses are wearing Philip Treacy creations with Princess Eugenie in a blue fascinator with a large purple, slightly embellished flower and beige coloured feather detail, and Princess Beatrice in a beige fascinator with ornate bow detail. In the photo to the right we have Sophie, Countess of Wessex wearing a beige fascinator with a large pointy feather accompanied by two beige flowers. These women were clearly in the mood to make a statement with these height topping hats!

Noir C'est Tres Chic
Whoever said you can't wear black to a wedding? These two certainly don't think so. While attending the royal wedding Sophie Winkleman, Lady Frederick Windsor on the left, wore an asymmetrical wide hat with a fancy bow detail and Zara Philips daughter of Princess Anne located on the left, wore a sideways hat with large ribbonlike bow detail on the right side of the hat, which was designed by Philip Treacy.

In Bloom
Spring was in the air for the Royal Wedding that was thankfully not rained on by a few April Showers and these hats with large flower details celebrated that. In the photo to the left, Queen Sophia of Spain wore a beautiful lavender coloured netted top hat design with small floral details that resembled hydrangeas. On the right, we have Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg's wife, Miriam Gonzalez in coral coloured floral headpiece that appeared to be wrapped around her head.

The Royal Wedding: Let's See The Ring!

With Prince William and Kate Middleton officially married (congratulations you two!) the world has been enamoured with every little detail, from the dress to the hair to the kiss and the ring! Before the newly titled Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, we had several other royals debut their sparkling engagement rings and InStyle.com recently posted a blog featuring all the royal rings. It was so inspiring I just had to post my favourites. Look on and be inspired:

First we have the actress turned princess, Her Serene Highness Princess Grace Kelly. Known for her classic and ladylike style, she inspired millions with her full skirts, twin sets and timeless pearls. She even caught the eye of luxury brand Hermes, which famously created the Kelly bag after seeing her use it to conceal her one of her pregnancies. Her beautiful emerald cut diamond engagement ring which perfectly fit her elegant style, was 10.5 carats with two baguettes created by known other then Cartier.

Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York has been known for more than her royal ties. She has been the spokesperson for Weight Watchers for several years and has also written several children's and lifestyle books. Instead of the traditional white diamond, Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York wore a ruby engagement which her former husband, Prince Andrew chose because of her bright red hair.

The Duchess of Windsor was an American socialite who had a controversial relationship with the former King Edward VIII. It was their deep love for each other that kept their relationship strong which was reflected in the 19.77 carat emerald engagement ring that Edward VIII gave to her that was inscribed by a personal inscription that read: "We are ours now 27 X 36". How special!

Our newest member of the royal family, Her Royal Highness Duchess Kate Middleton has become known for stealing Prince William's heart while at university and her modern yet simple fashion sense. For her beautiful engagement ring, Prince William gave her the same 18 carat oval-shaped sapphire ring that his late mother, Princess Diana wore because it was his way of keeping her apart of the experience. A thoughtful and sentimental gesture from a true Prince Charming. How romantic!

Think about flying to chic Paris first class and staying two nights in a deluxe suite at the Bristol Hotel courtesy of Ralph Lauren. Fashion Meets Film: Bill Cunningham New York

I often spend my Saturday and Sunday mornings sitting in front of the computer with my mother watching  On the Street with Bill Cunningham at NewYorkTimes.com. I have always enjoyed seeing his photographs of New York City street style from his coverage of what Anna Wintour was wearing at fashion week to Iris Apfel attending an art gallery or any average stylish person walking down the street.

With a nearly 40 year long career in photography, Mr. Cunningham is the original street style photographer and now you will be able to learn a little bit about the man behind the lens in the upcoming documentary, Bill Cunningham New York when it opens Friday, April 22nd, 2011.

Do you plan on checking out the film? Let me know in the comments, Facebook and Twitter!

Toronto's LG Fashion Week Fall 2011 Collections Part Four: Attitude by Jay Manuel

From coaching professional models-to-be to the designer showroom, Jay Manuel has made his mark at Toronto's LG Fashion Week with his new collection, Attitude by Jay Manuel available at Sears this fall. The styling was remarkable with layers of colourful monochromatic and contrasting looks with sleek belts and gold chains. References to the seventies and the ladylike style of Dior's New Look made his first collection a memorable one. Our first two looks feature the power coat. One has a knee-length hem line with a fur-trimmed collar and sleeves, the second in Royal Blue stands out with its military style pockets and gold buttons. These are the coats you want to wear when making a statement.

One of the best ways to showcase a ladylike silhouette is the pencil skirt and Mr. Jay had plenty of them in his debut runway show. To the left, we have a deep purple pleather pencil skirt paired with a peacoat, fitted turtleneck, chic sunglasses and bohemian turban. This monochromatic look creates a powerful and feminine statement. To the right, we have a chic tweed suit with multicoloured fur trim, a look fit for a woman who knows what she wants and goes for it, a la Upper East Side's Blair Waldorf.

It seemed no look in this collection was complete without a pair of opaque coloured hose. After all what better way to add a pop of colour to your look and some warmth to your legs than some fun tights. In shades of purple, burgundy, burnt orange and deep yellow, Jay showed that you can wear coloured tights with just about anything. In the look to the right, we have a teal coat accessorized with a bird-shaped broach worn over a print blouse and burgundy tights. The juxtaposition of this look add a fun element to a more sophisticated style. The look to the left uses colour as a way to punch up a classic look with the tights creating that special wow factor.

Bravo Jay, this will be a collection to remember. What were your favourite looks from LG Fashion Week? Let me know in the comments, Facebook and Twitter!

Toronto's LG Fashion Week Fall 2011 Collections Part Three: Joe Fresh

He's got the Midas Touch! Literally.

It seems everything that Joseph Mimram touches turns to gold from Club Monaco to the Joe Fresh line of clothing, accessories and fitness equipment to the upcoming first ever US location of Joe Fresh in New York City. He is on fire! We all know fall as the season of golds, yellows and oranges and it seems Joseph Mimram thinks so too! His latest collection for Fall 2011 was filled with glimmering gold in sequins, pleather leggings and rosette detailing. Metallics are the new neutral! The snakeskin print blouse and textured skirt in the look to the left show that combining multiple textures does anything but clash, it creates an eclectic unique look. The middle look is a marriage between classic white button-up and shimmering sassy mini skirt. The last look has some fitted leggings in darker gold with olive undertones. Paired with a camel coloured bag and short sleeve turtleneck, it continues with the trend of classic meets trendy.

 Saturation Point

Accompanying the sparkly pieces of the collection was an array of pieces in highly saturated colours in greens, blues, yellows and oranges. Many knee-length dresses were shown that had a modern and classic ladylike touch. The look on the left is a modern coat in royal blue which will add a bright pop to those grey fall days. Paired with a rosette textured skirt in the same colour, the styling of this outfit creates a monochromatic and stylish look. The middle look features a butternut squash short-sleeved dress with a large pleat in the front. It is the quintessential Joe Fresh dress, contemporary and classic. The soft tangerine A-line dress on the right may be a dress for the fall but it is perfect for the whole year, whether it be for a fresh spring day with tan leather sandals or with a tweed box cut blazer in the fall.

Bravo Joe Fresh on your smashing fall collection! You have done it once again.

Toronto's LG Fashion Week Fall 2011 Collections Part Deux: Arthur Mendonca

Enchanted Forest

After a three year hiatus, Arthur Mendonca is back to the runway with his latest collection for F/W 2011. Drawing inspiration from the glamorous and glossy seventies, his designs showcased a lot of v-necks, passionate purple and some razzle, dazzle with a little sazzle. These first looks featured featured forest-inspired prints mixed with a twinkling sparkle reminiscent of a starry night. The first look to the left features a tried and true silhouette with gold sequins and a classic cinched waist. The wrapped-up shoes with the furry details makes this look extra glam.  The lightweight coat to the right is accented with a black fur collar creating a perfect look for late night out.

Purple Reign

The dominant colour of his collection was featured in everything from dresses to separates, but it truly shined in these dresses that are perfect for any fashion powerhouse on a mission. The look to the left features a floor length show stopper reminiscent of Jerry Hall circa 1970 with its gathering at the waist and flowing skirt. The look to the right features a dazzling purple velvet v-neck dress perfect for standing out in the crowd for any party or hot date.
