A Day in the Life: A Mad Makeover at Banana Republic

New York City is always booming with something fun to do and today that something was a shopping party celebrating the critically acclaimed hit television show, Mad Men at Fifth Ave's Banana Republic.

With 30% off everything in the store and free makeovers from the talented make-up artists from Shiseido at Saks Fifth Avenue, this event was here to celebrate Mad Men's exclusive casting call with Banana Republic.

If you attended the chic soiree, then you are in luck because you had the benefit of receiving a lovely Mad Men inspired makeover as I did. The make-up artist decided to give me a sun-kissed Mad Men look which might I add, looked radiant. She applied shades of brown and gold eyeshadow, pink blush and red lips which accented my blue, purple and yellow dress wonderfully.

When it came to the fashion, Banana Republic stayed true to form with a slew of soft neutral pieces in dresses, cardigans and skirts. My favourite pieces were a buttery soft taupe biker jacket without too many doodads. It had two bias cut lapels and a small silver zipper, just the way I like it. I also enjoyed a lightweight denim boyfriend blazer with flap pockets and a tie at the waist. It is the perfect in between season jacket (Definition: a jacket that you can wear in the spring and autumn).

If you have always wanted to enter the Mad Men universe, all you have to do is visit a local
Banana Republic (in the United States or Canada), take one of the Mad Men brochures, go home and take a photo of yourself in your Mad Men attire and submit that photo along with the unique code in your brochure and you will be entered for a chance to a walk-on role on Mad Men!

Easy as pie!

Enjoy!

You can take the girl out of Barbie, but you can't take Barbie out of the girl!

Upon a stroll in Manhattan's midtown I stumbled upon the world famous toy store, FAO Schwarz. It was a very hot day and wanting to escape the extreme heat, I ventured in. After walking around I stumbled upon the Barbie section and instantly felt like a little kid all over again.

Like many little girls, I was the ultimate girly girl and I absolutely loved my Barbie! I remember having Gymnastics Barbie, the Barbie camping trailer, the Spice Girls Barbies and the Barbie CD-ROM fashion designer game. These were all prized treasures of mine but as I grew older I began out grow good 'ole Barbie. However, after seeing all the fashion designer influenced Barbies at FAO Schwarz the flame has been reignited.

When I was younger we had the Fashion Avenue Barbie Clothing Collection and I remember thinking that that was the epitome of stylish Barbie clothing but the latest crop in Barbie designer clothing has put that to shame. As of late all designers seem to dabbling in Barbie clothing design from Kate Spade to DVF to Jeremy Scott even jewellery designer Tarina Tarantino! So behold! My favourite fashion designer Barbies:

Diane Von Furstenberg- The designer known for her boho colourful prints and wrap dresses has taken that style to the mini fashionista. With the ease of her comfortable wrap dress and stylish luggage, this Barbie is more than ready for the jet set lifestyle that her many jobs entail. The raspberry colour looks very nice with her dark hair and olive skin.

Karl Lagerfeld- Now this is what I call a one stylish Barbie! The silhouettes are impossibly chic. The white coat with black and white striped collar and cropped sleeve with black skinny pants is one of my faves and perfect for a stroll on a cool autumn day (yes, I mentioned autumn) and the egg shaped skirt of the navy and white polka dot dress are a modern take on the classic strapless A-line dress. It is nice to see that with the pint-sized dolls, style is not sacrificed.

Vera Wang- She is the go-to designer for bridal wear and now Barbie gets to get in on all the fun. This wedding dress is absolutely beautiful! From its ornate lace details all through out the bodice and satin tie to its mermaid silhouette with a slight asymmetrical hem. This is a dress fit for a princess.

Mad Men Collection- It is not just designers that are taking their design skills to the world of Barbie, it's television shows too! Barbie has come out with a Mad Men Collection of Barbies featuring former housewife Betty Draper, ad exec Don Draper, silver fox Roger Sterling and everyones favourite ginger, Joan Holloway. The highly coveted style of the cast of Mad Men is now available in teeny, tiny form and is still more enviable than ever. Case in point, this navy separate worn by Miss Holloway. Nothing beats a fitted silhouette, for it says confident, chic and powerful so effortlessly.

Now that is just a taste of all the stylish Barbies out there. If you would like to see more visit, BarbieCollector.com.

Summer, Summer, Summertime: Resort Collections Part Deux

Maybe it is just being in New York City living through a heat wave but as of late I cannot resist colour in my wardrobe and with Marchesa's resort collection it is hard to resist. There are so many beautiful cocktail dresses and full length gowns bursting with oranges, golds and a touch of India. Whenever you want to feel like you are vacationing on a yacht around sunset in the Mediterranean, throw on one of these numbers and you will feel just like that. Look on and admire:

I love this teal maxi dress, which I like to refer to as a goddess dress with its gold and black accents. The large tribal necklace and earrings add to the exotic look of the gown. I love the flowing hem of the dress which I could just imagine floating behind whoever is lucky enough to wear this. The colour also accents a midsummer tan beautifully. Some wonder where it is appropriate to wear such a gorgeous dress and after seeing the streets of New York, may I suggest everywhere? Maybe not one as fancy as this up and down Madison but if you have a dinner to attend or a show to catch, why not through a colourful maxi dress with some gold bangles and strut down the street?
Nothing beats a minidress especially after those long walks around the city and gruelling hours on the Stairmaster. With all that hard work, who wouldn't want to show off those toned gams? This embellished dress with orange fringe by Marchesa is glam meets Abu Dhabi. The tiny, ornate embellishments and bright tiered fringe bring a simple silhouette into show stopping territory. I could just imagine wearing this dress at cocktail party on a rooftop terrace looking over Manhattan!
Hot heat equals pink cheeks and this one-shouldered number takes fuschia to a whole new level! The animal print and gathering at the waist complemented with the ruffled sleeve are what makes this dress ultra-glamorous. Animal print has been everywhere lately and I cannot say that I am complaining. I have always been a large fan of animal print and when used in colour it can look very luxe as this dress proves very well.

Until next time! Enjoy!

Summer, Summer, Summertime: Resort Collections Part One

With the hot, hazy days of summer the last thing you want to be wearing are jeans, jeggings or formfitting anything. Instead, it is always best to opt for something more fluid, loose and bright with perhaps an embellishment here or there.

Although resort collections are typically for the annual winter vacation, I can't help but admire them come summer time. I just love the lightness and colour of it, and the way it makes you feel as if you are sunbathing on Lake Como when you are really just in your backyard.

Chanel, Chanel, Chanel. How can you not love Chanel? With its classic yet edgy take on everything, one cannot help but admire its beauty. These three looks are excellent for some fun in the sun.

The first look uses the always classic, all-American gingham which is just oh so cute! Bikinis with ruffles are a great way to add some swing to your beach lounging and what is a bikini without some accessorizing? If you plan on wearing jewelry to the beach such as this long necklace or perhaps some gold bangles,  I highly suggest you wear cheap jewelry to avoid ruining or losing a more expensive piece. I also recommend coating your jewelry in clear nail polish to help prevent rusting.

Look number two is classic, chic and cute all over! No Chanel look is complete without a chain strap bag and bow detail on a blouse. It appears that this geometric print jacket is a new alternative to the typical beach cover up. If you have a lightweight blazer, why not try wearing it over your bikini when you want to take break from the water.

Look number three is the way to wear to black in the summer, lightweight with a hint of sparkle. Halter-style maxi dresses are my fave and make everything in the summer seem so easy breezy. Perfect for afternoon cocktails and rooftop parties.

I hope I provided you with some midsummer fashion inspiration. Until next time!

Enjoy!

Photo of the Day!

Being in New York it is hard not to be inspired by every person you see walking down the street. Everyone is just so stylish. I have seen a fair amount of maxi dresses in all sorts of prints, purples and blues, fabulous bejewelled sandals and incredible shades.

With all the stylish people strutting the sidewalk, which should really be called the catwalk, I decided to photograph the stylish lady in the above photograph. Always very fashionable, she usually sports looks from J. Crew and Top Shop while always putting her own spin on it.

Kudos to you, girl!
