Fall Inspirations: How to transition your summer staples into your fall wardrobe

So now that the summer is winding down and the chilly months of autumn are ahead of us, I bet you all are dying to pick up some of falls hottest pieces. Motorcycle jacket, anyone? If you are anything like me, you still love all your favourite summer pieces, that LWD (Little White Dress), floral prints galore and gladiator sandals. But how? How? Does one transition these coveted pieces into an appropriate look for fall? Read on my friend, read on.

Do Wear White After Labour Day

Whoever said not to wear white after Labour Day clearly did not have a pair of some hot white
jeans or eyelet dresses. Although white is a shade often synonymous with the warm months
of July, when paired with the right pieces and colours it can look very fall appropriate. Take the ultimate cold weather shade, grey. When white pants paired with the twisted neck sweater pictured below, it takes the bright white and adds a cool, fresh look to your fall wardrobe. Add brown slouchy boots, this seasons motorcycle jacket and you are good to go. White pants and the grunge-inspired plaid shirts that appear to be everywhere are another way to bring your your bright bottoms to the forefront this fall.

One of my favourite pieces for the summer is the LWD. It adds a breath of fresh air to those hot humid days and can provide an unexpected pop to your fall staples. Take a look at (picture below)Kate Spade's Fall 2009 take on the LWD. When paired with colourful tights the look is good to go!

Colour Me a Shade of....... Pink?

Pink may not be the first colour you think of when mentally preparing you fall wardrobe. In fact, any bright colour at all may seem a little out of place, but it is all how you put it together. A bright yellow cardigan looks great with a blue plaid tunic and take a look at this style from Oscar De La Renta's fall 2009 collection (pictured below). This yellow bubble skirt looks smashing with the purple printed blouse and dark tights. From my wardrobe I have my favourite pink peasant blouse as you can see (pictured below) for summer it looked just right with white shorts but it can easily be carried into a fall look when worn with a waist-cinching belt, wide-leg trousers and again with, you guessed it! A motorcycle jacket. You can also place it with a leopard print scarf and sexy liquid leggings.

Summer Florals turn into Autumn Jewels

Just because the crispy fall leaves will soon be decorating the streets and the sun will not come out as often, does not mean you cannot still wear those fun florals. Floral prints can add an unexpected splash to your fall wardrobe and are back in style with clothing lines such as, Charlotte Ronson's for JC Penney line, I [Heart] Ronson. You can pair your dearest floral blouse, dress or skirt with your favourite boyfriend blazer, dark tights and skinny jeans. Check out the looks below. The purple floral printed Yumi Kim dress was one of my favourite summer pieces. When paired with a soft grey cardigan and slouchy boots its a perfect look for strolling around the city come fall. When wearing summer florals in the fall, it is best to place them with colours that are slightly darker to make them autumn appropriate.

Remember the key to stretching your summer wardrobe into fall is layering! Think cardigans, tights, blazers and belts. They are all the best ways autumn-ize your beloved warm weather pieces. If you have any ways to autumn-ize your fall wardrobe, share in the comments section. Happy Labour Day!

The Top Ten Commandments of Fashion, Shopping and Everything in Between

And here it is, the final commandments of the Amanda's Fashion Spot, Top Ten Commandments of Fashion, Shopping and Everything in Between. Read and enjoy,

9) Thou Shall Not Overindulge in Trendy Clothing Items and Accessories

Studded everything, acid-washed denim, plaid shirts, '80's neon and a whole lotta leather, all 'new' trends for the upcoming fall season. Each of these latest looks have some sort of appeal in their own special way. Leather leggings are tres hot with caged heels, brights colours are a great change and accent to neutrals with plaid shirts adding a casual appeal to your outfit. However, whenever trying something new you must, at times, proceed with caution. When wearing any trend, the best rule is to wear no more than two at a time at most, depending on what it may be. Wearing too many trends at once can overwhelm your look and make it appear as if the clothes are wearing you and nobody wants that. It also best to stick to trends in the form of an accessory, such as studded heels (gorgeous) or a hot pink handbag, to allow them to compliment your clothes. Now, this does not mean you cannot pick up that mini sequined dress a la Balmain, it just means that trends work best when they are worn in moderation, for a balanced outfit is always the best outfit.

10) Thou Shall Work Hard If Thee Desires to Werk (It) in the Fashion Industry

I personally have had quite a bit of experience in the fashion industry. For the two years I was in fashion school I volunteered, worked in retail as well as interned and let me tell you, it was not always easy. I had a lot of late night sewing sessions and early morning buying lectures but in all honesty I enjoyed everything minute of it. I realized that if I wanted anything in life I had to work for it and work hard. As much as some of us may wish, nothing will not just fall in your lap, you must earn it. If you are an aspiring fashionista, do your research. Make sure your know designers, editors, models, photographers, etc. Attend industry events and volunteer to gain contacts to help build up your resume. It is a hard latter to climb, but once you reach the top it is all worth it!

So there you have it Amanda's Fashion Spot readers, the culmination of The Top Ten Commandments of Fashion, Shopping and Everything in-Between. Anytime any of you are having any fashion troubles, be sure to print it out and read it over for a little guidance. If any of you have any fashions tips or tricks, feel free to share in the comments section. If anyone has any fashion-related questions contact me at: and I will be there to aid your fashion wound.

Last but not least remember that fashion is meant to fun, so good out there read those magazines, watch some Fashion Television and start shopping!

Fierce, Bad and Couture: Bandits in Bows Fashion Show

Swarms of people made their way to the Rivoli on Queen Street West to view first-hand the frisky, cutting-edge and memorable 'Bandits in Bows' fashion show by Maybe by Sarah Catalfo.

The caution tape was up and the scene was set with garbage cans and gas containers decorating the stage turned runway. The show was kicked off with an upbeat performance of 'Don't Stop Dancing' by singer, Lauren Elle and was followed by a short film displaying a sexy bandit in action. Soon a remix to the late Michael Jackson's "Smooth Criminal" started blasting and the show was underway!

The fashion show was kicked off with a fitted black shiny strapless cocktail dress accented by a bow hairband. The look was naughty 'n' nice with a little Gossip Girl thrown in. Other memorable looks were a scowl neck white jersey dress with a light grey graffiti detail and a lace bodysuit with a black bubble skirt. These looks are great to wear to any party or sociable event come fall or whenever you want to have a little fun with your look.

This is the third Maybe by Sarah Catalfo fashion show I have had the privilege to attend with her custom and tailored-made looks continuing to improve. This particular show was slightly reminiscent of  Christian Lacroix and the jewellery provided by D.I.F.F.Y. Designs fit perfectly with the clothing, with a model wearing bow necklace made out of net. This up and coming fashion designer really taps into to the young girl who likes to take risks with her fashion choices and be little bold. Kudos!

Photo of the Day

Now, just because that cold dreaded season is just around corner does not mean you still cannot enjoy a little colour in your wardrobe and daily dose of fashion. I love this upbeat photo for Moschino's Spring-Summer 2008 Ad Campaign photographed by Patrick Demarchelier, it is so fun and carefree.

Her main influence is the Coco Chanel and she strives to be a good role model for other budding fashion designers.

Maybe by Sarah Catalfo: Spending the Day with Sarah Catalfo

As I with Sarah in her sewing studio catching up on all the exciting things going on in our lives we begin discuss all the things that has inspired her as a designer, what is behind the name Maybe and her latest fashion show, Bandits in Bows.

Sarah Catalfo, George Brown College graduate, ambitious creator and fashion designer. After learning how to sew from her mother at the age of 14 she knew that the treasured past time was more than just a hobby. "My mother was the one that taught me but I soon began teaching myself and soon I was teaching her!" Catalfo says. During the year of her sweet sixteen, Catalfo began making clothes for friends and family and it was high school when she had her first fashion show.

After her line had its first taste of the runway she knew that she needed something to identify it with, a name that was memorable and Maybe was it. "I thought Maybe was cute and suited everything I wanted for my line. Coyness, feminine and flirty. It's makes you think of possibilities and it's a memorable trademark. I want to be memorable." says the high-achieving designer. Catalfo describes the Maybe girl as, "humble yet self absorbed. She likes things that define her own style and she likes to be seen. She's someone who is less concerned about trends and brands." As for her ideal model, listen up ladies, "someone who likes to express individuality through her fashion."

Catalfo will have no trouble making a place for herself in the fashion industry. Her clothes often include bright contrasting colours, textures such as, lace, appliques and even seashells which were used for her last fashion show inspired by a recent trip to Cuba. Catalfo has had quite a bit of success in her design career with her most memorable moment being the 2009 Juno Awards where singer, Lights wore on of her dresses. "I just wanted to to bask in the feeling of that moment. It made all my hard work pay off. Not a lot of people get to experience and savour the moment." Catalfo says she would also like to worth with other celebrities such as Gossip Girl's, Taylor Momsen, Miss Canada and Peaches. "I like working with musicians their musical inspirations inspire me."

Catalfo is currently is working on her much-anticipated 2009 collection "Bandits in Bows" which debuts tonight at the Rivoli on Queen Street West. The Catwoman meets Jessica Rabbit fashion show that is expected to have bodysuit clad models with R&B performer Lauren Elle is just the beginning of this designer's successful career. In ten years she plans to expand into menswear, internationally and beyond. With Catalfo's ambition I have no doubt she will be able to just that and more!

Photo of the Day

I love Gwyneth Paltrow's style. It is so classic, so clean and so elegant. During the promotion of Iron Man her looks still inhabited it's classic feel but this time it was a little edgy.

The Top Ten Commandments of Fashion, Shopping and Everything in Between

Alright-y, it is the fourth and exciting installment of The Top Ten Commandments of Fashion, Shopping and Everything In-Between!

7) Thou Shall Not Wear Clothes That Need Adjustment Whilst Wearing

The other day I was with my friend and I noticed that she was wearing a fitted t-shirt that required constant tugging at the waistline. Like many shirts with any amount of stretch (and sometimes not), her shirt was riding up and revealing her tummy. A lightbulb lit up in my head and I instantly thought that proper fitting clothes should never be adjusted, they should comfortably fit your body. In some cases, you shouldn't feel the clothing at all. The moral of the story is, if the clothes don't fit then don't wear it! By fit I mean that you do not have a muffin top while wearing your pants, you do not have crease lines left on your skin after changing your clothes and you are not swimming in your sweaters. Next time you go shopping, look for items that are not too tight and not too large. Don't be afraid to go up or down a size, for it is not the number but the fit that counts. Last but not least make sure there is no tugging involved!

8) Thou Shall Not Reserve Fancy Clothes for Fancy Occasions

Meeting a friend for lunch? Why not thrown on that statement necklace to accompany your casual tee and hot jeans. Going out for cocktails? How about you try on that printed dress you have been dying to wear. Not always having a formal occasion to attend does not mean you have to let your favourite dresses, tops and heels collect dust. Clothes are meant to be fun and serve as a visual representation for the wonderful person that you are. Don't hide behind gigantic sweaters, baggy pants and dull colours. Take some extra time to add some sparkle to your look.

The Top Ten Commandments of Fashion, Shopping and Everything in Between

And now, it is time for the third installment of The Top Ten Commandments of Fashion, Shopping and Everything in-Between.

5) Thou Shall Not Be Discouraged by High-End Stores and Expensive Boutiques

Always keep an open mind while shopping because you never know what little gem you may be able to find. If price is an issue for you, don't be discouraged to visit a high-end boutique. Many stores have clearance sections and newsletters that verify you whenever they may be having a sale or special promotion. E-newsletters often send out printable coupons to be used in-store or online and magazines such as, Lou Lou often include coupons and list promotions occurring in lots of different boutiques. Also, if you have the extra money feel free to splurge on that item that makes you feel uh-mazing, you deserve it!

6) Thou Shall Wear Accessories in Proportion to Their Shape

Accessories to an outfit can be like the cherry on a sundae. They just add that certain je ne sais quoi. To make the most out of your precious accessories it is best to wear them in proportion to your shape. A very petite person can be overwhelmed by an oversized bag. If someone that has a very round face wears hoop earrings with a large bauble necklace, they may look 10 years younger but not in the best way. You get the drift?

You may be one girl who..............likes to be a little edgy. You may be one girl who...............likes to be a little funky or you may be one girl who.................likes be a little fancy.

The pretty in pink boutique on St. Clair West, One Girl Who strives to reach out to girls everywhere who want to unleash their inner............whatever makes them fabulous. The sister store to La Parpar Boutique, which specializes in baby items and women's clothes and Living Squared which focusses on home items, has made its mark with the store's array of fun, stylish clothing and delicate accessories.

Doesn't this photo just evoke the summer to you? It is so natural and whimsical it makes me want to be a flower child. Shot by Steve Meisel for Italian Vogue.

The Top Ten Commandments of Fashion, Shopping and Everything in Between

Here is your second round up of The Top Ten Commandments of Fashion, Shopping and Everything in Between!

3) Thou Shall Value Style Over Brand

Who cares if you bought a basic white t-shirt from Aritzia or Joe Fresh? As long as the clothes are flattering and they look great on you that's really all that matters. With that in mind, when purchasing clothes from fast-fashion retailers such as Zara and H&M look for clothes that contain natural fibres like, cotton, linen, silk or wool. These items will generally last longer and wear better. Also, look at stitching to make sure there are no broken stitches and fabric ends are serged. If you are going to splurge on a pricey well-known brand make sure it is something classic that you will love forever. For example, a good pair of leather boots or a wool coat. My mother once bought a silk blouse from Calypso and she has worn it more times than I can count!

4) Thou Shall Take Care Of Their Clothes

Always read the care label when washing your clothes. From working in retail, I cannot tell you how many times customers have come to me complaining that their beloved dark jeans have faded and shrunk! As a general rule, wash items in cold water with like colours and hang to dry, especially jeans. This is the best way to preserve the longevity and quality of your clothes. If you have items that require a dry cleaner, take them there. Need hand washing? Do it!

The Top Ten Commandments of Fashion, Shopping and Everything in Between

As a fashion graduate and writer, I am often approached with questions about fashion and style. Therefore, I thought it would be very helpful to Amanda's Fashion Spot readers, to have a fashion guide to assist them through their style journeys.

Read on for the beginning of the Top Ten Commandments of Fashion, Shopping and Everything in Between:

1) Thou shall dress for your body type

Whether you are pear-shaped, an apple, boyish or an hourglass, the best way to get the most out of your wardrobe and look like a million bucks is to wear clothes that flatter your shape. If a certain cut or trend looks great on one person it does not mean it will look great on you. As a general rule,

-Pear-shapes emphasize your top half with colours and prints. Keep the bottom half darker.
-Apple shapes emphasize your bottom half with items such as, white or coloured pants. Keep the top half darker.
-Hourglass? Emphasize your waist, think belts.
- Have a boyish figure? Wear body-skimming cuts and create curves with strategically placed details

2) Thou shall wear colours that enhance their features

I always say, if a colour does not look good on you, then why wear it? It's always best to wear things that make you feel the most confident and flatter what the Lord gave you. As a general rule,

-If you have lighter features such as, blonde hair, blue eyes and fair skin, try pastels, light greys, bright blues, oranges and pinks.
-If you have medium features such as brown hair, brown eyes and olive skin, try jewel tones like raspberry shades, emerald green and cobalt blue.
-If you have red hair and freckles, try neutrals like olive green, browns and khakis. Pink, burgundy and teal shades look great on you.
-If you have darker skin, dark hair and eyes, bright colours are your best friend.

Overall, everyone can pull off white, black and any colour as long as you find the right shade for you. When going shopping, experiment a little and look for colours that really make you pop!

Stay tuned for the remaining Top Ten Commandments of Fashion, Shopping and Everything in Between!
